This was the last of three sold-out performances in St Etienne-de-Baigorry / Baigorri after Moncayolle / Mitikile) and Ordiarp / Urdiñarbe.
The pastoral Matalaz, by Etxahun Iruri, written in 1954, performed in Esquiule in 1955 then in Paris in 1964, was performed again, this time by the groups Oilarrak and Müsik’alde. First presented in Moncayolle and Ordiarp, the last performance took place in St Etienne de Baigorry / Baigorri on 04/13/2024.
History will remember that Matalaz, a country priest, had the audacity to stand up against the exorbitant privileges of local lords and paid for it with his life in a popular rebellion which set Soule (Basque Country - Euskal Herrian) alight in 1661 during the reign of Louis XIV. Matalaz died beheaded in Mauléon-Licharre on November 8, 1661.
The pastoral is a theatrical genre mixing songs, dances and narration, all in Basque and more precisely in souletin. Battitte Berrogain, a regular at pastorals, was in charge of the direction.
