To be a Brahmin

The Upananaya is also called the "sacred thread ceremony or Janeu". This is the initiation ceremony that introduced the boy to the rank of Brahmin (the priestly caste and of a higher caste). The emblem of Brahman is the sacred thread (Janeu). It is generally circular, one node is allowed and is traditionally worn on the left shoulder. This very private ceremony and the cord make a Brahmin boy.
