In the spring of 2023, Sabino Egurce Goikoa left us. Known to all, he was one of the very last shepherds in the Aezkoa Valley and the last in the strict sense of the term. He retired from the profession at 80 after spending his entire life in the mountains. He knew everything about the history of contemporary pastoralism and its heyday. Little by little, he saw the shepherds disappear inexorably from his valley. The Basque Country is a whole and the mountains have no borders. On both sides of the Pyrenees, the shepherds are the same and share more or less the same history, the same life, the same language, the same passion. This is why it seemed important to us that Sabino Egurce, the ancestor with the mischievous gaze, brings his testimony here.
